EVERGREEN UPROOTED (CHAPTER 4 EXCERPT)

Shockingly, Buck had become my new stepfather overnight.  I remember Buck and Mommy were standing in front of Mommy’s bedroom window, blocking the sunlight.  The light shined around the frame of their bodies.  I could see Mommy's cut-up face from the car accident.  She had on a look of gratitude.  I stood there, stunned.  I was unable to connect to my true feelings about my new daddy.  Mommy had had boyfriends in her past but she didn’t marry any of them.  I thought, What is so special about Buck?  I wanted to ask, “Why him?” but I wouldn’t dare.  I just stared, feeling dazed, as though I was dreaming.  Mommy swiftly snapped me out of it.  “Secret!  Stop daydreaming.  Now this is my husband and your father, I want you to respect him and call him ‘Daddy’ from now on.  Go tell your sisters that I got married and they are to respect my husband.”
“Okay Mommy.”
“Are you happy to have a father now?”
“I guess so.”

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Excerpt Chap. 4)

“One day Ace mischievously had his wife in my apartment while I was out handling some business at the welfare office.  Here is how I caught him.  Ace spent the night.  Before I left my apartment to go to welfare, Ace kept asking me, ‘What time you coming back?’  I was puzzled and thought it was strange that he kept asking me the same question over and over again.  So I decided to come back earlier than what I told him.  When I reached the building, I saw Ace and his wife standing in the courtyard arguing.  I walked up to them and said, ‘Ace, meet me upstairs.’  Then I walked away and waited for him in my apartment.  When Ace finally came upstairs to my apartment, he brought his wife with him.  Now everything Ace bought his wife, he bought me too.  So, he bought us these identical gold bracelets from the Caribbean Islands.  His wife noticed the gold bracelet on my arm and assumed it was hers.  She tried to snatch it off my arm, and she and I started fighting like animals.  Ace broke up the fight and hurried up and gave us some cocaine to distract us, given that he was a drug dealer.  Then he propositioned me and his wife to have sex with him at the same time.”

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Ch. 5 Excerpt)

My grandmother told me about the time when Argus hit Aunt Pearl.  My grandmother said, “Pearl called me one day on the telephone crying, I asked her what was wrong.  She said, ‘He, he…’ and before she could get the words out I hung up the phone and went over there with Frank Junior.  Frank Junior knocked on the door and when Argus cracked that door open, Frank Junior beat the hell out him!  Pearl was in the background crying and pleading for Frank Junior to stop.  I cheered him on: ‘You better not stop, beat him!  Beat him!  Beat the hell out of him!’  Frank Junior beat him all throughout that apartment.  Frank Junior put one hell of a whopping on him.”

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Ch. 4 Excerpt)

Buck was brown-skinned, tall, and very skinny.  He had extra-long legs, a narrow face, big bubba lips, and crater-holes on his cheeks from shaving.  The first time Mommy introduced him to me, she bragged, “Buck is no joke.  I feel safe around him because he told me stories about how he fought in the war, and he knows how to handle guns.  Everyone on the block is scared of him, and all the women on the block are jealous of our relationship, even his family.”
That first time I met Buck I looked closely, trying to see what Mommy saw in him.  He had dark black stains on his lips from smoking cigarettes, and yellow teeth, and a southern accent.  He had big hands and big feet.  He was wearing straight-legged Lee jeans with the permanent crease down the middle, and a plaid short-sleeve button-down shirt.  His clothes looked neat and clean, and his Afro was short and sharp.  He looked at me and reached in his pocket and pulled out a small brown paper bag.  I wondered what was in that bag.  “Here.”  He handed it to me and smiled.
“Thank you, what is it?”
“Why don’t you open it and see?”
I anxiously opened the bag...

EVERGREEN UPROOTED (CHAPTER 5 EXCERPT)

“After Jessica’s murder, Frank Junior became severely depressed.  Later he was on antidepressants, prescribed by the psychiatrist that was treating him, and he was staying at my parents’ house.”
On October 16, 1982, when I was six and a half years old, around the same time Mommy married Buck, Uncle Frank Junior held my grandparents hostage at gunpoint.  It all started early in the morning, when my grandmother told my Uncle Frank Junior, “Get up and go to work.”
He said, “No.”
She said, “Yes you are, you are going to work today.”
He snapped, and pulled out a pistol on my grandparents.  He demanded they go into the kitchen and kneel down on their knees.  Because they moved slowly, he fired...

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Ch. 7 Excerpt)

CHAPTER 7 (EXCERPT)

If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon
the earth:  and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.  Ecclesiastes 11:3

It was late 1983, and I was still seven years old, when Mommy started to bring my sisters and me to the crack house.  She started off taking us with her, and did for several weeks, but later as her habit progressed she would leave me alone with my sisters for hours and sometimes days.  Debbie and Ricky ran a crack house out of their apartment in building 1184, which was right across the street from my building.  A crack house was a place where drug dealers bought, sold, and cooked crack.  Drug dealers asked a person addicted to drugs to run a crack house and in return, the dealer supplied the addict with drugs.  That was Debbie and Ricky’s hustle for getting high.  A person strung out on crack was called a “crackhead.”  Crackheads would go to Debbie and Ricky’s house with the intentions of taking only one hit and then leaving, but end up getting stuck there until all of their money was spent.  That was the disease of crack.  It was designed to make you want more.
Most crack houses looked the same.  They were poor and bare inside because a crackhead would do anything, sell everything, including their own child, to get high.  Debbie and Ricky’s crack house had a table and a sofa in the living room.  There were no end-tables or lamps, only a ceiling light in the hallway by the front door.  The walls were dirty and bare, with beige chipped-off paint.  The hardwood floors were sticky and dirty.  I felt like I was walking on dry juice.  Black garbage bags were used as shades for the windows, and the refrigerator was always empty.  Mice roamed around the kitchen as though they owned the place.  The roaches had grown into full-blown water bugs.  They openly climbed on the walls and flew around the apartment.  The smell of crack filled the whole apartment.  It almost overtook me, like a backdraft from a fire.  What bothered me the most about the whole situation – they didn’t own a television or a radio.

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Ch. 5 Excerpt)

The New York Times read, “A state prison guard held his 60-year-old aunt hostage at gunpoint for 14 hours in her Bronx home before releasing her unharmed and surrendering late last night.”  And: “Police negotiators had been summoned by the man’s parents.”  And: “In the Bronx, the 40-year-old guard, Frank Weems, had taken his aunt Edna Lee, his cousin Gloria Lee, and her son Skia hostage, at about 8:40 A.M.  About an hour later, he released the cousin and her son from the two-family home at 3562 Eastchester Road in the Williamsbridge section, the police said.  Mr. Weems continued to hold his aunt until he gave up at about 10:45 P.M., said Sgt. Tom Fahey.”  And, “Police negotiators said that they had talked with Mr. Weems, a guard at the Otisville Correctional Facility, on the telephone, but that he ‘kept hanging up.’  They said they had not determined why he took the hostages, adding that he made no demands.  They said Mr. Weems, who lives in Middletown, N.Y., had a history of emotional disturbance and had been under psychiatric care.  He was taken to Bronx Municipal Hospital Center for psychiatric tests.”
The news reporters and the detectives were unaware...

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Excerpt from Chapter 4)

CHAPTER FOUR (EXCERPT)

Mommy would reminisce, “At first, I didn’t like your father.  But he just kept chasing me.  Then I found out that our birthdays were the same month, and the same day.  My mother always told me to date a man with a suit and tie.  Well your father wore suits and ties, and he had a good job, so I thought I was doing the right thing.  I was crazy about your father.  He’d promise to take me out.  I would get all dressed up and be looking out the window for him to show up.  Most of the time, he stood me up.  He was also a whore.  He couldn’t settle for just one woman.  One time he looked at me and my cousin and said, ‘Which one of y’all is going to give me some tonight?’  He grabbed my cousin’s skirt and said, ‘You?’  Then he grabbed my skirt and said, ‘or you?’  That’s just the type of man he was, very nasty, and very arrogant.  And, he didn’t play any games.  But no one could mess with Pankey like me.  I used to hit, punch, and push him around.  Yup, he would be trying to leave and I would push him down on the couch and say, ‘You ain’t going nowhere.’

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Excerpt from Chapter 3)

Their knops and their branches shall be of the same:  all it shall be one beaten work of pure gold.
Exodus 25:36

At this time, I was the oldest out of four girls.  I was born in 1976, Naomi in 1977, Armani in 1980, and Eve in 1983.  I called myself Secret.  Naomi and I were a year and four months apart, so most of the time in this period, I only had to watch my middle sister Armani and my youngest sister Eve.
Naomi and I sort of looked alike, but we had different personalities, and different fathers.  Her hair was straight, black, silky, and thin; mine was thick, dry, and full.  We were the same complexion and about the same height.  Although I was the oldest, Naomi was more mature, and wiser than me.  For example Naomi would prepare for the day early in the morning, while it was still dark outside.  She was the first one up, every morning, so she didn’t have to fight over the bathroom or worry about anyone getting in her way.  She always took her clothes out at night and ironed them, so all she had to do in the morning was get dressed.  She took her time in the mirror, making sure her hair, and face, looked perfect.  I, on the other hand, was not a morning person.  I was disorganized and always late.  I waited until the very last minute to get up.  When I finally got up, I had to search for clothes to wear, and fight over the bathroom.  I always looked like I threw myself together.
When confronted with a problem, Naomi knew how to fight back with her words.  I, on the other hand, could barely speak without stuttering.  I knew what I wanted to say, but I just had a hard time getting the words out.  Plus, I spoke with a lisp.  Naomi loved to dance and crack jokes.  Most folks from the neighborhood laughed when they heard her jokes – that made her very popular, and well liked.  She had plenty of girlfriends to hang out with.  They liked to play with dolls, do hair, and watch cartoons.  All three things were boring to me.  I hated playing with Barbie dolls, which were for kids.  I had enough problems trying to do my own hair, and cartoons were too unrealistic for me.  I preferred to hang out with the teenage boys on the block.  I liked to climb trees, and play baseball and kickball.  I didn’t care about prissiness, beautiful hair, long nails, and toe polish.  I was rough.  I cared about the streets – going outside, sitting on the hood of someone’s car, listening to the boys crack jokes.  The aura of the streets mixed with the night’s air made me feel safe, like a baby latching onto a safety blanket.

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Chap. 4 Excerpt)

Before that, two huge events had taken place in my life:  the classic movie Annie was released, and Mommy was recovering from a major motor vehicle accident.  The accident happened shortly after Armani was born.  Mommy’s friend was driving her to the welfare office, when she drove into a street pole.  Mommy flew through the front window of the van and almost lost her life.  I remember coming home from the first grade and seeing Polaroid pictures of Mommy’s disfigured face, spread out on my kitchen table.  They were taken by some of Mommy’s drug-addict friends.  Mommy’s whole face was covered in blood and glass.  She was beyond recognition.  All of Mommy’s dope-fiend friends were standing around, drinking beer, smoking cigarettes, and yelling over each other’s voices about her accident.  Finally my grandfather, her father, Frank A. Weems Senior, who lived in the uptown area of the Bronx, walked in and said, “Your mother is in the hospital, she was in a motor vehicle accident.”
Later, after Mommy recovered, she sued and was granted $165,000.  Unfortunately, Mommy had broadcast to everyone that she knew (including Buck) about the settlement funds she was shortly to be receiving due to that horrific car accident that almost put her six feet under.  I can still hear the sound of her keen voice explaining, “Yeah I crossed over to the other side.  I saw this bright light and I was with God.  It was so peaceful.  I knew that I had children that needed me but...

EVERGREEN UPROOTED, Memoirs of Secret (Excerpt Ch. TWO)

For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.   Jeremiah 17:8

TWO

I grew up in the birthplace of hip-hop music and culture: the Bronx, New York.  During the early eighties I lived in the South Bronx on Evergreen Avenue, right off Westchester Avenue.  Above the street sign “Evergreen” was the number six train line.  It seemed like all the bodegas, “corner stores” as those in the neighborhood called them, were in competition.  The bodega that was located across the street from my building, right at the corner, had neon lights that read “LOTTO.”  Across the street was another store, with the words “Grocery Store” written in graffiti.  Parallel to that was another store that contained very few groceries.  Stores such as those were usually cover-ups for drug trafficking.  In the next block over, there was yet another bodega, which had a portrait of a madman sprayed on the face of the building.  The picture reminded me of the Joker in a deck of playing cards.
The South Bronx was home to many underprivileged people.  Parks, pools, and community centers were nonexistent in my hood.  So for the people living there, especially the poor, it was all about finding ways to laugh and have fun.
In the summer, we looked forward to opening the fire hydrant – we called it “the pump.”  We flooded the street with water.  No one cared that the pump was supposed to be used to put out fires.  The young boys wore ripped jeans turned into shorts and were shirtless, revealing their skinny hairless chests.  They made a hose by cutting off both ends of a soup can and attaching the remaining cylinder to the flowing water.  They used it to spray the vehicles as they drove by.  We called it “the car wash.”  The OGs (Original Gangsters), respected men of the community who sold illegal drugs and made a lot of money, drove through my block in expensive SUVs and luxury cars, blasting the latest hip-hop songs, with smiles on their faces.  Everything about an OG was glamorous – from the fresh waxed paint on their vehicles, to the thousand-dollar rims and tinted windows and leather interiors, to their tailor-made suits worn with shoes that shined brighter than Mr. Clean’s bald head.  I watched the OGs lean back, nod their heads to the music, and roll their tinted windows up for the car wash.  One by one they slowly drove by and watched the excitement on the young boys’ faces as they sprayed the water.  The water looked like diamonds rolling off their vehicles.  Imagine that: diamonds in the hood.  It was like a scene from the movie Cinderella, unrealistic but not impossible.  Every young boy that was living in poverty wanted to be an OG someday, and every girl wanted to marry one.  Judging by the satisfied look in the OGs’ eyes, giving the young boys something to do made them feel justified about polluting the streets with drugs.
I watched teenage boys throw young girls over their shoulders.  The girls would be kicking and screaming while the boys tossed them into the brisk cold water that violently shot out the pump.  No one stopped us, because no one paid attention to what was going on in the ghetto.  A little further down the block, near the bodega, the guys crowded around and shot dice.  I had fun watching them crack jokes and snap on each other while gambling for a few bucks.
Someone always had their radio in the window, turned up to its loudest capacity, playing the hottest hits from radio stations like KISS and WBLS.  Hanging out on Evergreen was like being in a club and hearing the DJ play your favorite songs.
I recall jumping rope outside and playing hopscotch while hearing "It Takes Two" by Rob Base coming from someone's window at one end of the block and at the other end, "This is Something for the Radio" by Biz Mark, coming from someone's car.  Being part of the ghetto gave me a rush, a feeling of excitement.  The streets and I became one.  I stayed out all day and night, until around four or five o'clock in the morning.  When there was no one else to hang out with, I went home.
I hated going home.  Going home meant that I might observe Mommy coming down off drugs.  When I walked through the door, I did my usual lockup.  This meant to lock the top lock, lash the chain, and lastly slide the long police pole, which was a special lock used for victims of domestic violence.  Every time I slid that pole into its groove, it reminded me of the time this strange-man knocked on our door and tried to break in.  I never got the chance to see his face.  Mommy cracked the door open and he tried to push his way into our apartment.  Mommy, my sister Naomi, and I tried to push the door shut.  The strange-man shoved his hands between the cracks of the door to prevent us from shutting him out.

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 2

Excerpts from Chapter 2 of Evergreen Uprooted

After walking past the kitchen, using the distant dimmed light from the hallway to see, I would tiptoe on the squeaky hardwood floors until I reached the cluttered boxes filled with second-hand clothing and all sorts of junk mail. When I reached those boxes, I knew I was at the living room. I would stand at the door of the living room, which had been transformed into Mommy’s bedroom, and strain in the dark to see if she was home. My eyes always landed on her dresser first. She had enough medicine bottles on her dresser to supply a pediatric clinic. She had albuterol, nebulizers, pain reliever and fever reducer, amoxicillin, penicillin, calamine lotion, ringworm solution, chicken pox medicine, corn starch, diaper-rash ointment, A&D ointment, and empty methadone bottles that she had obtained from her drug rehab at the Lee Building in Harlem, with a little bit of orange juice mixed with methadone a
t the bottom. I have to admit I was often tempted to drink it, after being outside all day and having only water.
Her vanity display consisted of an eye-pencil, and a lipstick tube that was always half empty because it served as her lipstick, blush, and eye shadow. She used her pinky finger to dig it out. Next there was my middle sister Armani, who was short, and adorable. She also had a different father, and she looked just like him. She was light-skinned with sandy-brown hair, big brown eyes, and thick eyebrows. When she frowned, which was quite often, her eyebrows met in the middle of her forehead, forming the shape of a unibrow. Armani was sneaky, quiet, and soft-spoken. Naomi took off her sneakers and socks. “Suck my toes.”
Armani frowned, “Ill, that’s nasty.”
Naomi wiggled her toes. “Sweet Tooth, go in the kitchen, look in the cabinet, and get the Adobo seasoning. Sprinkle some of it on my toes. Then suck them.”
Armani seasoned all ten of Naomi’s toes with Adobo, and then sucked them. I watched her open her mouth and suck the big toe to the pinky toe. After she sucked the last toe, Naomi gave her a piece of candy.
