The New York Times read, “A state prison guard held his
60-year-old aunt hostage at gunpoint for 14 hours in her Bronx home before
releasing her unharmed and surrendering late last night.” And: “Police negotiators had been summoned by
the man’s parents.” And: “In the Bronx,
the 40-year-old guard, Frank Weems, had taken his aunt Edna Lee, his cousin
Gloria Lee, and her son Skia hostage, at about 8:40 A.M. About an hour later, he released the cousin
and her son from the two-family home at 3562 Eastchester Road in the
Williamsbridge section, the police said.
Mr. Weems continued to hold his aunt until he gave up at about 10:45
P.M., said Sgt. Tom Fahey.” And, “Police
negotiators said that they had talked with Mr. Weems, a guard at the Otisville
Correctional Facility, on the telephone, but that he ‘kept hanging up.’ They said they had not determined why he took
the hostages, adding that he made no demands.
They said Mr. Weems, who lives in Middletown, N.Y., had a history of
emotional disturbance and had been under psychiatric care. He was taken to Bronx Municipal Hospital Center
for psychiatric tests.”
