EVERGREEN UPROOTED (CHAPTER 5 EXCERPT)






“After Jessica’s murder, Frank Junior became severely depressed.  Later he was on antidepressants, prescribed by the psychiatrist that was treating him, and he was staying at my parents’ house.”
On October 16, 1982, when I was six and a half years old, around the same time Mommy married Buck, Uncle Frank Junior held my grandparents hostage at gunpoint.  It all started early in the morning, when my grandmother told my Uncle Frank Junior, “Get up and go to work.”
He said, “No.”
She said, “Yes you are, you are going to work today.”
He snapped, and pulled out a pistol on my grandparents.  He demanded they go into the kitchen and kneel down on their knees.  Because they moved slowly, he fired...
