CHAPTER FOUR (EXCERPT)
Mommy would reminisce, “At first, I didn’t like your father. But he just kept chasing me. Then I found out that our birthdays were the same month, and the same day. My mother always told me to date a man with a suit and tie. Well your father wore suits and ties, and he had a good job, so I thought I was doing the right thing. I was crazy about your father. He’d promise to take me out. I would get all dressed up and be looking out the window for him to show up. Most of the time, he stood me up. He was also a whore. He couldn’t settle for just one woman. One time he looked at me and my cousin and said, ‘Which one of y’all is going to give me some tonight?’ He grabbed my cousin’s skirt and said, ‘You?’ Then he grabbed my skirt and said, ‘or you?’ That’s just the type of man he was, very nasty, and very arrogant. And, he didn’t play any games. But no one could mess with Pankey like me. I used to hit, punch, and push him around. Yup, he would be trying to leave and I would push him down on the couch and say, ‘You ain’t going nowhere.’
